Welcome to “Night on the Town”, Wells

So what is “Night on the Town”?

“Night on the Town” is simply an annual event organised by a team of Wells volunteers as a way of helping to promote Wells and everything it has to offer.

How did it start?

It originally started in 2009 as an initiative between Somerset County Council and the BBC, called “Spend a night on the town”. We believe Wells was one of the few areas that managed to make the event happen, although anyone who remembers that first year (2009) would also remember it was relatively quiet. After 2009 the council passed on the responsibility to the city and a small group of volunteers took the bull by the horns and were committed to making it work in future years. So in 2010 the event was repeated on a bigger scale and it was a much bigger success. We now aim to make this an annual event in the Wells calendar, in September each year.

Who is involved?

You’d be surprised how few people are actually on the organising committee and each of them dedicates a significant amount of time and effort to making this event happen each year. Take a look at the organiser’s page for a list of the main people.

How is it funded?

The event relies on sponsorship alone. We have to beg & borrow most of the things we need to make it happen! In 2009 it was funded mostly by the council but on a very small scale. In 2010 it relied on private sponsorship but ran at a slight loss. As the event grows in popularity we hope to make it ‘self-funding’ to the point where there may be a surplus for donation to selected charities. Nobody makes a profit from the event, it exists only as a way to promote our city and get it buzzing. Individual traders may do good business on the night but that’s what it’s all about, and we would hope some of them will contribute in successive years, either financially or by volunteering their time. So if anyone would like to get involved in future events, please let us know!
